Back From the Beach...

Sorry for the long radio silence...
I've been at the beach... soaking up the sun (a little too much sun), having fun with that man and those children (some of them)... It wasn't our regular trip to the Outer Banks, but my close second choice. Also, it wasn't just our family, but a scout trip - but since some of the scout families are like family...
Things I learned at the beach:
1. I can go nearly 5 whole days without Internet, my iPhone, and laptop. A good lesson for me. I feel pretty danged free and without worry that my phone or laptop would get broken or sand/water damaged. In fact, my crappy temporary cell ended up locked in the truck the entire time we were there because I did not care.
2. The ocean and cell phones do not mix. Ask K3. He forgot to take his cell out of his pocket and is in the process of ordering a new one.
3. Spray sunscreen sucks. I am sun burnt. So is that man. He has stripes on his back and I have burn in weird places...
4. Horse Flies are the devil.
5. Porta Johns suck. (I knew this from last year)
6. My future daughter-in-law is a trooper. 5 months pregnant and her first time sleeping in a tent for more than a night. It was her first "real" camping trip and she did wonderfully and without K1. We had a blast!
7. That man with a fishing pole at the beach equals a real smile. (I already knew this, but it was good to see) And I have not seen one of those smiles in quite a while.
8. Also, even though I already knew that man is awesome... He willingly dealt with the chaos of picking up my iPhone on the way home.
9. Sometimes you have to make 65 million trips to the closest pharmacy because they have the best tea in the world on sale.
10. Laughter really is the best medicine.
It was a good trip. But I am glad to be home. I missed home. I am not looking forward to Monday morning though...

Sunday Morning

These weekends go far too fast!
Yesterday was a blast the whole way around.
Writers meeting, with a great speaker, then lunch.
While I was waiting for a friend to pick me up for girls night in, I caught up on laundry - which was not a blast, but a necessary task. But yay! It's done!
Then to the mountain for girls night with my sisters and mom. We had a blast! Laughed, talked, cried a little, learned more about my s-i-l's breast cancer, ate, drank, started watching a movie, but turned it off because we wouldn't shut up... Bedtime didn't roll around until 3am. We only saw the supermoon once before the clouds covered it.
And, of course, sleeping late was a necessity this morning. Now we're trying to get moving on today. The bff is hosting a surprise anniversary party for her parents (I can safely post that here, because I know they don't read this). My family will be arriving shortly from their weekend in the woods (if they can manage to get my brother's truck started). There's food to prepare, wine bottles to clean up, and festive things to do.
This is definitely one of those weekends where having an extra day would be a bonus. Wait. Every weekend should be like that.
That is all for now!

Sunday Funny...

I received this note when K2 returned yesterday:
"Dear K2's mom, (Obviously it was K2's real name - not K2)
Hi! I am *****. I am writing this note to express my deep, undying love for your daughter. Which means I probably would love you too. Which makes me say, Hey there, I hope you're having a fantastic day! That's all for now. Bye! ***** ****"
Pretty funny, and obviously my kid made some great friends this summer.
We're going to be in adjustment mode over the next week or so while we get used to having her back. And the chaos. Always the chaos.
I have to go and write now.

Sunday Funny

This is supposed to be me.
The girls spent hours playing with Play-Doh Friday night. There were dinosaurs, snowmen, eggs...you name it. And for some reason, they made me.
Sent K2 back to college this evening. I don't know why but saying goodbye was so much harder this time. I didn't even feel this emotional when we took her the first time. Maybe its because even though she's seriously considering changing her major and transferring to a school where she could live at home, she's going to be out on her own for real before I even realize. And maybe it's because it'll be months before she's back home again.
The house is quiet for the first time in nearly a month and we're all a little sad. Now we start the "real" routine. Which includes writing time. I'm going to start plotting as soon as I wrap this up.

Weekend Recap and Stuff

Saturday: Wedding was fantastic! There is a lot to be said for starting your life off together with laughter. We got to see friends we haven't seen in ages. There was much laughter and music and hugging. We rode the bus to and from the hotel, which was a good decision and much fun. We met new friends from across the pond. It was definitely among the top two weddings we've ever been to.
Sunday: Up earlier than we should have been for what time we finally went to bed. Over to the bride and grooms house to help prepare the brunch. Finally, after keys locked in vehicles and missing keys, everyone arrived and we had a blast sitting around, eating, and discussing the previous night. Grocery store. Home for homework and laundry and the usual household chores. Very tired.
Today so far: Overslept which meant rushing to get kids to school, forgetting violin lessons, mad searching for jeans (washing machine mistake - the wrong pair got washed and they're missing the button), somehow managing to get them to school on time. Grandbaby hanging with daddy today. Which brings me to perhaps the funniest thing of the day: K1 put grandbaby over his head. She was giggling and drooling...yeah...big old string of drool...right in his mouth. I laughed so hard. He was, and still is, disturbed.
And that is all for now...

Saturday

A random-type post.
My writing group met this morning. What a great bunch of people! I love the energy we share and I love laughing with them and laughing even when we're trying to be serious. I also love talking about the retreat, which I got to do plenty today! Lunch was fun with awesome food and great company.
I came home to utter chaos. All four kids were home, plus the grandbaby. There was much hilarity. It's fantastic to have them all together. They make me laugh so hard.
We were watching a show on fungus and they were talking about "magic mushrooms" and showed a clip of Woodstock and K4 asked: Is that how Hippies were made? Ha!
Back to the insanity!

Video Saturday

I've known these little boys since they were born. They're the bff's nephews and they're not so little anymore. (but I'm pretty sure they still fight like this) Wait for the end. It's hysterical.

Better Than Email...

A recent note exchange in my house:
From K4 to K1:
K1,
Can you please spray paint this stick black. Please. Thank you, K4 (then the word "stick" with an arrow pointing to the real stick - on the kitchen counter) P.S. But don't take the stick, it's mine.
(She'd spent a lot of time taking the bark off a stick and to give her credit, it was a cool looking piece of wood.)
From K1 to K4:
Dear K4,
I would spray paint (lots of arrows point to the stick) this stick black, but I don't know if there be any more black spray paint. Arrrrr.
K4's comment after reading his note: "What does he think he is, a pirate?"

I was going to scan both notes and post them so you'd get the full effect, but the paper got wet and the ink ran. And the stick got painted. Not black, but bronze. K4 feels that's a better choice anyway. Except I have no idea what the stick if for, or why she wanted it painted.
And that is all. Arrrrr.

Things....

Overheard this week:
(actually, it's something my kid says. She even has a t-shirt.)
"Suck it up, cupcake. I'm not your mom."
(Of course, I won't have many chances to use it, since I am the mom. But...)
"You made bean soup? Well, that's not going to smell good later."
(ha! And, she was right.)
While I was cleaning out the fridge - upon discovery of something in the way back that was green and hairy with no way to know what it originally was.
"Why did you make that?"
(umm...)
While the younger K's were cleaning up dog poop so the yard could be mowed...
"I'll tell you what, that dog poops way too much. This is ridiculous."
(ha!)
There were many more, but I seriously have to start writing them down!
