Still Raw...

I brought the folks home tonight...
We had Mom cremated as she wished and her ashes were mixed with Dad's. We had to get another box to store them and we picked one that we can open and take ashes to spread when we feel up to that.
Now we wade through the legal and financial stuff. I was working on that tonight - going through bills and bank statements - preparing a list for the attorney. The family chose me and my sister in law to be estate administrators. Then, we'll need to clear out the house. Oh and my family may be moving there if we can work it out. We'll see...
This weekend was equal parts rough and good. Rough because we always camped with Mom and Dad. This would have been our first Memorial Day camp out without Dad. Instead, it was our first without them both. Mom had been planning on coming and using her camper for the first time since Dad passed. How much suck is that?
It was a nice weekend, though. It was nice to relax and not have to get up at a certain time or talk to people if I didn't want to. We got there late because our house was horrible due to not being home consistently in almost two weeks. We had to clean and I'm so glad we did. Coming home to a clean house (despite the napkins the cats decided to strew all over the place) was really, really nice. It was freezing Saturday night and I thought I might die. Sunday night was better, though. Our friends came camping with us, which was awesome, even though I didn't feel well after the picnic and had to cancel plans to go visit a friend who just had surgery. K5 and Baby B were there, which was also awesome. I also had a great conversation with Simon and I should be writing again soon. I actually have an idea for the anthology we'll be self publishing with a few other authors.
Now I'm just waiting for the new normal to settle in... I miss my parents. I never thought I was going to be an orphan this soon.

The Saturday of No Sleeping In...

So... I was going to sleep in a lot longer... My phone rang at 7:48am. I heard it, but rolled over and ignored it. (sometimes That Man calls me to try to get me out of bed... and I had gone to bed late so...no...) Then, the notification that I had a voice mail sounded. I knew it couldn't be good. I listened, and as I listened, I got up and put clothes on. That Man flew into our room and said he had to go, because he got the same call. I was going with him, because my dad had fallen and Mom needed help getting him up. So... we went. And yes, I went in my Mickey Mouse jammie pants and an ugly sweatshirt. That Man got Dad up, he made him tea. We chatted for a few minutes and then That Man and I went about our business of setting up new bank accounts thanks to the breach at my payroll company. What a freaking pain. (Oh and I did go home to change out of my jammie pants and ugly sweatshirt first) I went back to the 'rents so my mom could go to the grocery store. I wrote many words. I started laundry for my mom. I looked for this freaking cool-as-hell bowl my sister needs, but sadly, didn't find it. My dad slept. I put on obnoxious television, but he didn't wake up. I tried, but he was tired and in pain.
Mom got home and I rushed to meet K4 at the haircut place. She was in the chair when I got there. Half of her head was shaved. Despite the shock value of her new haircut, it's super cool. She loves it. I do, too. It's so her. And, seriously... it's only hair.
The d-i-l had picked her up previously to take her to the mall, specifically to Victoria's Secret to be fitted for bras. Since they hadn't been able to get her a bday present, this was a big deal. VS was having an enormous sale and many bras (in the right size) were bought. Both of my girls were happy. Baby B was a huge flirt during this whole process. After the haircut, we had lunch, then found a 50% off bathing suit and cheap flipflops. Also super cool.
Then grocery shopping where I saved a significant amount in coupons. Then rushing to get K3 to his Improv show at the coolest venue! A bookstore! Cheap coffee. Cool building, except they don't do fiction. But still! When we got home, K3 left to do teenager things. That Man and I made our food for tomorrow's picnic. I talked to my parental unit and now... it's now...
And I'm super tired and must go to bed. The sleeping in thing? Yeah... Not going to happen tomorrow... We're going to hear K4 speak at her job. Then we're heading to The Wilds for the holiday picnic.
We're sad we couldn't camp this weekend... Very much so...But, we weren't ready and there is all of this stuff going on and needing to be done... So whatever...

Random...

I know it's Wednesday again already... Yay for short weeks!
The long weekend was awesome (and so was the black raspberry sangria). It rained. A lot. Though the rain didn't hamper much of our plans. It definitely cooled things down and gave the teenagers an opportunity to get muddy. We ate a lot, hung out with friends we don't get to see much, shared many an adult beverage, worked on the new pavilion in the camping spot, laughed, cooked, stayed up too late (which was fine because sleeping in the humidity was next to impossible), laughed, and had a blast.
It was over far too soon. And now it's Wednesday.
I'm not sure what's up for the coming weekend besides my writing meeting! In the meantime, I must get to work!
That is all for now!

A Weekend List

What was awesome about this weekend:
1. My writing group meeting - new faces, new members, visitors. Lunch was fun, even though I will not be sad if we never go to the restaurant again. I got what I usually get and it had absolutely no flavor.
2. Saturday night and our journey to hear an old friend perform at a nearby bar. What a blast! He played songs only our table knew and the look on his face when we moved to the table closest to the microphone was priceless. It was a lot of fun - good music, great friends, good food, good adult beverages, great friends.
3. Potluck picnics.
4. Creek time! It felt really really weird not to camp this weekend. (We had way too much going on. Camping wasn't logical. And thank goodness after the storms we had last night. And today.)
5. Funny ventriloquist shows and copious amounts of (free!) italian ice. (though the dummies were creep-tastic!)
6. K5 all day today! She is such a hoot! We had a blast with her.
7. All four kids home today! What a riot!
8. A semi-clean house to start the week.
I'll stop there. It was a good weekend. And writing? Well, this was my weekend off. I got my first crit back tonight and while I have work to do on the story, I am bolstered by the fact that my crit partner thinks the story is awesome despite the work I need to do.
That is all.

Back From the Wilds...

Yeah, we were camping this weekend...in the wilds...
I have no pictures because the camera is defunct. If it wasn't, here's what I would have pictures of:
1. My granddaughter's 1st birthday party. She's a riot!
2. Swampland...We got hit with a major storm Saturday night. Major.
3. Bald Eagles.
4. The dent in my dad's truck. It's not too bad, but how he got it was amusing...
5. The awesome picnic food.
6. S'mores made with peanut butter cups.
7. Dam building.
8. Young love...(enough to make someone want to puke)(lol)
9. The huge snapping turtle we caught last night.
10. A whole slideshow of people flipping the kayak.
Time for bed...and Holy Cow...it's July already!!

Memorial Monday

Happy Memorial Day!
We are back from the Wilds...well, the Almost-Wilds. We did camp, but not in our regular spot. In fact, except for a few feet, our camper did not move from it's storage spot. It was way too wet to camp near the creek, so we stayed at my sisters. We had a blast!
And the tree is cleaned up. We have a little wood to stack, but it's all off of the grass. The lines are still down, but we'll probably wait for a few weeks until they can get them back up. There's still a lot of damage from the storm and I'm sure we'll be last on the list since all of our stuff is still working.
Now it's back to the grind...
And...damn, it's hot out!
That is all...

Weekend Wrap Up

Happy Labor Day!
And labor I have! Ha!
We were camping in The Wilds this weekend. We weren't gone long enough and there wasn't sufficient relaxation on what will most likely be our last camping trip this year. (sad face)
But here we go:
1. Quick efficiency with set up and tear down of the camper. And I did the set up by myself, which included hooking up and hauling the camper, and positioning it. And hauling the camper to it's storage shed today.
2. Cool temperatures. Man, it was nice. Really, really cold last night, but fantastic for sleeping.
3. Camp fires.
4. Picnics with tons of food.
5. K2 being home and spending time with her sister.
6. Laughing with my sister and brother-in-law.
7. Not too many bugs.
8. Candles that smell like fall.
9. Sleeping in.
10. Being home.
And that's all for now. Back to the grind tomorrow. But first I need a shower!

Tall Tale Tuesday...Or Not

There's a lot I could Tall Tale Tuesday about, but I'm not feeling any of it.
I mentioned the weekend was not relaxing and I'll tell you why. Or at least some of why.
Tuesday evening, my sister got bit by something. By Wednesday morning, she had a rash. This rash got bad enough that she went to the doctor Wednesday afternoon. They said she had shingles and gave her a bunch of meds. Thursday morning, she was in so much pain she could barely walk. And she had a fever. She called the doctor and went back in. They gave her different meds, drew a circle around the area and told her if her fever got higher or if the redness extended beyond the circle to go to the emergency room. She texted me a little before 11pm to tell me they were on their way to the emergency room. She's been in the hospital ever since. Sunday night they did surgery to remove the necrotic tissue and the infected area. Now she's got a wound pump to help draw out the nasty fluids. They still don't know what bit her, or what's causing the infection.
There's a possibility it was a Brown Recluse spider. We're still waiting to hear anything on that. It's rare in this area, but not unheard of. My brother-in-law thinks he caught one and it's currently in a jar waiting for confirmation on what species it is.
It's possible she could come home today. With the wound pump and a visiting nurse.
So there you have it. Scary stuff.

Feel Good Friday - The Post Camping Edition

I don't think I've missed blogging this many days in a row in a long time! Not that you've missed me or anything. Ha!!
This weekend was perhaps the weirdest camping trip we've had in a long time! It was very quiet, with only my parents and us out there in the wilds. And we had a lot of running around to do, so it wasn't very relaxing. But let me hit the good highlights and I'll fill you in on the rest throughout the week.
1. The very cool nights. Made for some excellent sleeping.
2. Getting to see and actually talk to K2. Even if it was only for a few hours.
3. Chicken Taco Soup
4. The owls we heard in the trees Friday night.
5. Hanging with the kids.
6. The texted pictures of my granddaughter.
7. Hanging with the folks.
8. Getting a visit from my granddaughter when we got home from camp.
9. Showers. Flushing toilets. The Internet.
10. Air conditioning.
More on the weekend through the week.

Back From the Wilds

*This was supposed to go up yesterday. I'm not sure what happened!
First off, Happy Birthday to my oldest baby! It's difficult to wrap my head around the fact that he's 21 now. And about to become a daddy. I distinctly remember him being a baby, and quite honestly, it doesn't seem like it was that long ago. I don't feel any older, so how does this happen?
I know. I know.
Anyway.
We're back from our relaxing weekend in the wilds. It was wonderful. The weather was beautiful. The company awesome. The kids all had friends down either for the entire weekend, the afternoon, or just overnight and they had a blast. We hung with the family and friends and also had a blast.
There were geese, eagles, frogs, deer sightings, fish, turtles, tons of Mayflies, and the huge spider I stepped on while barefoot. My sister's dog caught two groundhogs, so there were two funeral services for said beasties.
Good sleeping, good eating, lots of laughter - Great weekend.
And now we're home again - with insanity looming on the schedule.
I want to go back.

Feel Good Friday

Here we are at Friday again!
And here's the list:
1. Thankfully cooler temperatures. The past two days were nearly unbearable. I'm not ready for that kind of heat yet.
2. Catching up with one of my bff's. Though it meant being on the phone until midnight. It was worth it. I miss her.
3. Camping! Whoot! First campout of the season and I am so looking forward to it.
4. Changing my mind about what I'm working on. Again. Though I am very happy with my decision and I haven't abandoned the other ideas. I'm heavily editing/rewriting a story that I absolutely love - call it a modern Frankenstein story.
5. Strange cooking ideas that actual work out. Store brand brownie mix + a few packets of hot chocolate mix = awesome brownie cookies.
6. Being nearly ready to hit the road for camp.
7. Big baby bellies! About a month until my granddaughter arrives.
8. The fact that even though our calendar is extremely loaded, most of it is fun stuff. Now if I just had an unlimited supply of cash - birthdays, graduation, parties, grandchild - you get the picture.
I'm off!

Sunday Random

Happy Mothers Day to all of you Moms.
We did some celebrating yesterday and last night and had a very awesome time doing it. First we had to clean up our camping site, which was work, but fun. Let me just say I love power washing. I'm borrowing it to do our patio and I can't wait!
Anyway.
K2 dropped her phone in the creek. Awesome that. She's currently getting a new one after much woe and angst over the whole thing. Then...then, she left her truck keys in my truck and I got the whole way home when she called and told me. So I had to drive back up in my wet pants and frozen feet. But, the rest of the night was good and included good friends, good bands, and a lot of talking and laughing.
Today is moving slow, which is good. I know a lot of people think Mom shouldn't work today, but I had things I had to get done and I feel much better after accomplishing them. This week is nuts, with much to do before I leave for the retreat.
So there you have it.
Happy Mothers Day, Mom! I love you!

Sideways Saturday

Well, the expected frivolity, and the sleeping in, got seriously waylaid by a sick kid. I had to drag my butt out of bed earlier than I wanted and drive nearly two hours (round trip) to bring K3 home. Apparently there's something going around. K2 has it, too.
So...Instead of the leisurely day spent goofing off and shopping, we did a quick store run and are now back home. He's doing okay after resting a while, but is in no shape to go back to camp. K4 had a momentary breakdown over the demise of Girl Weekend, but a few new markers and some hair crap fixed her right up. Now we're watching movies and I'm going to finish my revisions.
That is all.

Thursday Rambling

So....No new Supernatural tonight. That's very sad. It's going to be a long time until they come back, too. I don't like it. No, not at all.
***
There's a lot of chaos in my house right now. B and K3 are going to scout camp this weekend. Laundry must be done. Packing, gathering up every scrap of warm clothes they can possibly wear at once. ha! It's cold. Very cold. More power to them for camping in this weather. I couldn't do it. They have a fun event going on this weekend that includes sleds, fake blood, and fire starting. They'll have a blast...it's just getting ready with everything else that's the burden. Oh, and did I mention that I'm almost out of laundry soap?
***
K4 is in her school's talent show tomorrow. Last I heard there were over 35 acts of jump roping, Taylor Swift song's, and other such things. K4 is the last act as far as I know. Which is going to make for a very long evening. Today is dress rehearsal. She says she's ready. I hope so.
***
I thought we had the college financial forms all taken care of. Apparently not. Yesterday I got a 10-page stack in the mail. Each page requires additional information, signatures, blood...Argh. I don't think it's ever going to end.
***
We're forecast for possibly ice on Monday. We'll see how that one plays out. If it does, look for a blog on more snow preparation theories. Ha!
***
That's enough!

I Forgot...

There was also a turtle! He was almost as big as this one. We spotted him in the creek eating the horrible vegetable soup I made for the picnic!

Feel Good Friday - The Monday Edition

I know it's Monday (though I keep writing Tuesday for some reason), but I hate missing Feel Good Friday.
So here we go:
1. Being with my family all weekend, though we were missing one who had to work.
2. Hanging out with friends.
3. Chicken Taco Soup.
4. Potluck picnics.
5. Bald Eagles.
6. Showers.
7. Campfires.
8. Being home.
9. Refrigerators, ovens, showers, washing machines, my bed, my couch, the Internet.
10. Clean feet.
So there you have it. Now I'm hungry for chicken taco soup again!

Back From the Wilds!

Took the camera, but didn't take one picture except for two with my cell phone. One I won't post here and the other I definitely will because it's funny. Not today though. I am too tired.
But, let me sum up the weekend...
Black snakes and black snake trickery - when my brother-in-law put their camper in place he said a black snake tried to crawl inside. So...after they got set up I put rubber snakes in their bed. They didn't get the reaction I'd hoped, but it was still amusing.
Bald Eagles - We saw an full grown eagle three times and a juvenile eagle once. The juvenile was fishing and swooped down over the creek to snag a fish. Pretty cool.
Gnats - They were horrible. As soon as you stepped away from the fire the nasty little buggers tried to clog your nose and eyes.
Middle of the Night Noises - Friday morning around 2 am, B and I woke to this horrible noise. We think it was deer fighting and it sounded like they ran right behind our camper. No one else heard it and it never happened again.
Toilet-papering - Our friend, Jo, came down to visit on Sunday. While she was napping (translation: drooling on my pillow) the kids toilet papered her lawn chair. That's what the picture is of. I'll post it later this week.
Dead Bodies - Friends of ours came up yesterday to camp for the night. While we were talking she said how cool she thought it would be to find a dead body in the woods. So...K2 and 'the boyfriend' stuffed some of B's jeans and a jacket with towels, snagged K3's sneakers and partially buried the scarecrow in leaves. We let him in on it and kept an eye on their little ones so he could walk into the woods with her. She thought it was real for at least 10 seconds and said she had to remember not to tell us things like that ever again.
I know there were a few more interesting things, but my poor brain is too tired to think of them right now. We had a lot of fun and it was a nice way to end the summer (even though I'm still not ready for it to end!)
Feel Good Friday post coming...

Where Have You Been?

Or...where have I been?
At camp.
I meant to post while I was away, but time got away from me.
We - or at least most of us - were at camp. Big surprise there.
Too much to 'splain, so I'll sum up.
Mice in my sister's camper. Again. Rain. Rain. Lots 'o rain. Mud. Lots of that, too. Big trees falling in the path (pictures of that later). Retrieving firewood from the woods from the last flood and almost getting stuck in the mud and losing my shoes. Laughing. Silliness. Campfires. Swimming. Stinky rugs. Rain. Tired dogs. Kids coming home from camp and then leaving again. Flooded tents. The potential for other kids to go to camp. Other kids going to camp soon. Ants. Friends. Little, little kids. Crayfish. Sparklers. Glow sticks. Hooking up and driving with the camper all by myself for the first time ever. Extra nights. Drama. Non-drama. Laughing.
Make sense?
I'm too tired to be coherent!
More later!

Monday's Thoughts...

It's Monday again.
And here's what I'm thinking:
1. Viking funerals.
2. Chinese food.
3. Chop sticks.
4. Pringles.
5. Band Aids.
6. Why ice from the store is different than ice from my freezer?
7. Bicycles.
8. Camping.
9. Alligators.
10. Fluffy pillows and clean sheets.
(#10 should give you a clue as to why this list is so random.)
Coherent?
Not.

Campers Left Out In the Rain

I mentioned how our camper was saved from sure and total devastation in my last post. I can assure you that's not an exaggeration. I'll set the scene before I tell you how it was saved. I know I've posted pictures of our usual camping spot. I'm too lazy to dig up one to refresh your memory, so picture a high embankment - maybe a fourteen foot drop to the water below with five or so feet of ground between the camper and the edge. We would have never camped there when the kids were little, but now that they're older and mostly sleeping in their own tents, we're able to pick such a beautiful spot.
Anyway. It rained Saturday night, raising the creek enough to prevent the kids from getting in and turning the water to chocolate milk. My sister and brother-in-law had some problems with mice so they were being extra vigilant during the packing up process. We had other things to take care of at home, and decided we'd leave the camper and go back for it one evening this week. (We were close enough that there was no way to get ours out without them moving theirs)
The week kind of got away from us - as short weeks often do. Thursday, we remembered the camper was still creekside. We decided we'd stop by last night and haul it out. No problem. Only...it's been raining here non-stop since Tuesday with only brief intervals of sun. Thursday night we had a torrential downpour that lasted for hours. Around midnight, B woke me up and said he was heading up to move the camper because he was worried.
He got up there, backed in and then shined his flashlight on the creek that should be several feet below. Only it wasn't. The water was only about a foot from the ledge. He hooked up, and as he pulled out, the water was crossing a low spot in the road ahead. Needless to say, we felt like we'd dodged a bullet.
By the next morning, we knew we had. My brother-in-law called and said the water was up to the picnic tables and had taken out the woodpile by the fire ring. Those places are a good three-hundred feet from where we camp. We would have lost our camper for sure - it would have either been filled with water, or considering where it was parked, tumbled into the raging creek.
I'm still amazed that B sat up from a dead sleep and knew what he had to do.
Kind of freaky, huh?
That's all for now.
